McREL: Turning what works in teaching, leading, and learning into innovation and results

Power Walkthrough® Informal Observation Seminar & Software

Goals/Objectives

Principals know that to serve as effective instructional leaders, they should conduct regular classroom observations. But what should they look for when observing teachers? What is the best way to track progress and report their observations to teachers? How can they determine if staff development efforts are leading to growth in teaching and student learning?

McREL's Power Walkthrough seminar and software helps school leaders turn their regular classroom observations into "power walkthroughs" by using a PDA, Tablet PC, Blackberry, or iPhone device loaded with McREL’s Web-based software. Strategies from our popular books, Classroom Instruction that Works (CITW) and Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works, are the basis for this classroom observation software. In just a three- to five-minute visit, you can observe  teachers' use of effective instructional strategies, level of student engagement, use of technology, and other teacher practices that research has shown to influence student learning.

McREL requires schools, districts or intermediate agencies that purchase the software for their administrators to attend a two-day training session designed to help school leaders gain a practical understanding of the Classroom Instruction that Works strategies, why they are so powerful in improving student learning, and how to identify their use in classrooms.

Description  Participants view a series of short videos that help them develop a clear understanding of effective instruction as well as the ability to identify the context of instruction (e.g., whole group, small groups, individuals), the type of work students are producing, whether students can identify learning goals, and the kind of technology in use.

Through practical, hands-on guidance, administrators learn how to use the Power Walkthrough software on their handheld devices to capture important data during each classroom visit. Participants leave the training session ready to conduct power walkthroughs in their own schools on the very next day.
