This document is one of eight reports prepared to support the development of a new learning system for urban students of color, a major initiative undertaken in 2009 by the Stupski Foundation. This report synthesizes recent research and theoretical literature on effective strategies for supporting these underserved students' social, emotional, and academic learning needs.

The report identifies five options for supporting the learning needs of underserved students:
  1. Adopt and/or adapt effective curricula and programs to promote social-emotional learning
  2. Adopt and/or adapt effective out-of-school time (OST) programs
  3. Adapt school day extension-of-learning (ELT) models
  4. Adopt and/or adapt the school-based health or student support center models
  5. Adapt systemic, family-centered, collaborative, and culturally appropriate approaches to student support services
