Product Description

This document is one of eight reports prepared to support the development of a new learning system for urban students of color, a major initiative undertaken in 2009 by the Stupski Foundation. This report synthesizes recent research and theoretical literature on data-driven decision making and high-reliability organizations to offer a vision for combining the right "dashboard" indicators with real-time, systemic responses to support the success of underserved students.
Authors  Charles Igel, Helen Apthorp, Gary Peterson, Tony Davis, Laurie Moore, Kerry Englert
Key Ideas
The report identifies four options for creating a system of diagnostics to track the success and learning needs of underserved students:
  1. Actively recruit good teachers and support their development
  2. Build a cohesive culture focused on data-driven decision making with defined site-level responsibility
  3. Develop and utilize longitudinal data collection systems for critical areas
  4. Enact timely and evidence-based interventions where systems have failed
