McREL: Turning what works in teaching, leading, and learning into innovation and results

Using Out-of-School and Extended Learning Time to Support Student Success

Goals/Objectives  Research shows that one of the strongest school-level correlates of student achievement is the extent to which schools optimize instruction time, making the most of every moment with students.

One of the best ways to optimize instruction time is to think beyond the school day, capitalizing on before- and after-school offerings, summer programs, and Supplemental Education Services.

Description  Through individualized technical assistance, McREL consultants can help your school or district take stock of your existing extended and out-of-school time services and align them with your school day goals.

Instead of viewing these programs as “add-ons,” we'll help you make them an integral part of your overall approach to increasing student achievement.

Based on our work with the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, McREL can help you
  • Systematically examine your current out-of-school time experiences
  • Consider the role these programs play in your school system
  • Align students' extended learning and out-of-school-time experiences to your school day improvement goals
  • Identify and address any gaps in your current out-of-school time activities
Target Audience  Principals and district leaders interested in leveraging students’ out-of-school time to increase achievement.
